Gemini and Pisces
When their voices died away, there came a cold silence over the lagoon, and then a feeble cry, Help, help! Two small figures were beating against the rock.
There’s not much use pretending that Gemini and Pisces are Sun Signs which are naturally as compatible as strawberries and cream, Oliver and Hardy, or Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. Not all, but some of them are as mismatched and antagonistic as the Arabs and the Jews have been over the years, though perhaps not as violent. However, just as peace is possible—and ever more likely—between these traditional foes, a happy compromise is also possible between Gemini and Pisces. If they have a Sun-Moon trine, sextile or conjunction between them, they can get along quite happily, as long as Gemini consents to occasionally swim through Neptune’s waters to keep the Fish company—and as long as Pisces is willing to fly fearlessly, now and then, alongside the Gemini Mercury Birds.
Still, an Air Sign is never completely comfortable in the element of water. There’s always the possibility of drowning—just as a Water Sign finds flying without a parachute a little scary. Could someone please stand beneath me, with a net to catch me if I fall? Since this is a 4-10 Sun Sign Pattern, should they discover a negative Sun-Moon aspect between their horoscopes, they’ll have to remember that mixing air with water must be done carefully, not carelessly. Otherwise, the result could be a dreary fog, or even a dangerous smog. It’s easy to see how this can produce a dampening or smothering effect (or both) on a business basis, within the family bosom, in a love affair or among friends. It is, undoubtedly, an unpleasant experience to be dampened (as Pisces can do to Gemini) or smothered (as Gemini can do to Pisces).
|Gemini:||You realize that whatever you say will be used against you?|
|Pisces:||That’s okay with me. It always has been.|
|Gemini:||Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Do you plead guilty or innocent? Speak up. You’re always so silent. It’s called pouting, and you do it to annoy me.|
|Pisces:||Oh, I plead guilty, of course. Guilty of being human, of possessing human needs and desires ……. even human failings. Isn’t that all right?|
|Gemini:||It depends. You have more failings than most people. You have no sense of deductive reasoning. You avoid the issues, sulk, and refuse to discuss anything. Your mind wanders. Three different times yesterday you ignored me when I told you something I wanted you to do, and you continue to neglect it. You run around listening to everyone’s hard-luck stories while your own life falls apart. You’re a masochist and a procrastinator. You leave all the important things undone, while you’re out chasing bubbles and smelling flowers. Does this make you happy?|
|Pisces:||Oh, yes! No one has ever been happier. Please make sure the jury is told, and the judge too, how happy I’ve been.|
|Gemini:||Don’t start talking about a judge and jury. This isn’t a trial, and you know it. We’re just having a discussion.|
|Pisces:||I’m sorry ……. but you sound like a public prosecutor.|
|Gemini:||Let’s stick to the point. You say you’re happy. That’s just another of your Neptune lies. You are obviously, at this moment, sad. Clearly depressed. Why aren’t you happy right now?|
|Pisces:||Because I’m not making anyone else happy…. not even you.|
|Pisces:||I’m sorry to submit you to a cross examination, please forgive me, but … well, I don’t trust you. I’m afraid of you. Don’t you see how cruelly your words can cut? Are you completely unaware of how unkind and how supercritical you are sometimes?|
|Gemini:||No more so than others. I’m just verbal enough to express my thoughts clearly, to communicate my feelings. I don’t keep everything inside, the way you do. I’m not sneaky, like you.|
|Pisces:||Yes, that’s true. You are clever. You can use words ever so much better than I. You’re even brilliant, at times. Lots of times. But … have you ever been happy? I mean, content with yourself, peaceful. Have you been? Ever?|
|Gemini:||I … uh, well … of course. Naturally. Why do you ask me that?|
|Pisces:||I just wondered. What does happiness mean to you?|
|Gemini:||Happiness? What does it mean to me? It’s ….. well, it’s a number of things you wouldn’t understand.|
|Gemini:||Like knowing exactly where I’m going, arriving there when I plan to arrive—knowing who I am and what I want.|
|Pisces:||Who are you? What do you want?|
|Gemini:||You are deliberately trying to confuse me. I refuse to answer any more questions.|
There are some ways in which Gemini and Pisces are alike. Both of them give an overall impression of evasiveness, always sliding just out of reach, with a chameleon’s talent for camouflage, as tricky to catch and pin down as fireflies (Gemini) and minnows (Pisces). Their mental and physical maneuvers (both) are quick, darting and elusive, first shimmering in light before you—then disappearing. Where did they go? Well, which one do you mean? The Fish just swam inside his (or her) deep emotional nature, for protection against further questions, more hurt—and the Mercury Bird, for the very same reasons, just soared mentally up into the gathering clouds above your head.
You’ve heard that Pisceans are very old souls. I’ve told you that myself, many times. It’s true. They are. They’ve come through the purifying deluge of many incarnations, and they understand everything and everybody—except themselves. The soul cannot reach the Pisces incarnation until it has mastered, at least once, all of the other eleven Sun Signs’ lessons. Since some souls remain in (or return to) a single Sun Sign experience for many lifetimes before mastering the positive side of that sign’s essence, you can see why the Fish is an old soul. You can also understand why the Piscean faces the most difficult of all karmic testing. For it is here, under Neptune’s strange influence, that souls may slip and slide, and forget some of the eleven lessons learned at such expense, either being forced, then, to return to a certain sign (like returning to learn grammar, when you thought you’d passed it) or being reborn into the Pisces vibration itself again and again, until they get the hang of it.
No wonder Pisceans are such a strange bunch. As a group, they seem to contain only saints and sinners, with hardly a normal pilgrim among them. Yes, the Pisces experience is the most vulnerable one, the most tempting to angels … the most likely to produce a fallen angel. A Fish may do nicely in Neptune’s school, then one day happen to forget the generosity mastered through the Aries, Sag and Leo incarnations, become stingy—and fall. Or live a smooth life of enlightenment, then some morning (or night), amnesia-like, forget the lesson of Libra fairness, and unkindly judge another ……. or forget the faint-remembered Taurus patience, and make some impulsive decision, agonizingly regretted, too late. It’s not exactly fun, being a Fish. So much more knowing is required of these men and women. They’re all on the karmic Honor System, and any West Point cadet can tell you how difficult a test of one’s worth any Honor System is—deceptively free, yet spiritually and ethically, extremely restrictive.
And so, the Fish float through the complex mazes of their existence, often searching pathetically for their own identities. When they do catch a glimpse of their real images in life’s mirror, they are first terrified, then disbelieving. What they see is a godlike self, difficult for the Neptune humility to accept. So they deny it, hide from it, and finally flee from it, into acting or music—often into the escape of drugs, alcohol, or illusion. A few settle into some sort of mundane ambition in the material world, which is entirely foreign to the imaginative Neptunian essence, and therefore, obviously not the Pisces route to happiness. The majority, however (fortunately for the rest of us), flee into creative endeavors, public service, science, religion, healing, teaching—or full-time private devotion to friends, neighbors and relatives.
If the Fish does not understand himself (or herself) the Gemini Twins are only too willing to clear up the mystery. Mercury-ruled people feel they can solve anything, figure out anything, take it apart, see how it works, then put it back together again. But after their cold critical analysis of Pisces, they sometimes leave the pieces scattered around, without putting them back the way they found them. A Fish who has been taken apart by Gemini can flounder helplessly for years attempting to recover his or her self-respect. Gemini is challenged to clear up the perpetual confusion hanging over Pisces with the razor-sharp Mercury mind, but some Twins can’t swim deep enough to even get past the seaweed ….. like human sandpipers, pecking away at nothing, unable to see the bottom of the ocean or to recognize its depth.
The wiser Piscean will usually look with indulgence, if not with genuine affection, upon the sometimes childlike antics of the Twins. If Gemini lives (and many Twins do) in an enchanted realm of make-believe, Pisces is delighted to visit there too. But Gemini tends to analyze and label all mystical kingdoms, even while frolicking there, and that spoils all the fun for Pisces. A dream is a dream ……. why come too near, look too closely? Pisces will not stand for personal probing or insistent questioning by the curious Gemini. If pressed too often, the Fish will either glide away to another stream, or take the easier escape of deception, all the way from subtle evasion to outright lying—justified by Neptune as simple self-protection from an invasion of personal privacy.
Sometimes the Pisces man or woman will unconsciously get even with Gemini for being continually forced into a position of accommodation, by refusing to show an energetic response to the Twins’ exuberance in communicating some marvelous new idea or plan. This may be the beginning of the end, because Gemini cannot long bear to have his (or her) enthusiasms and flashes of inspiration sprinkled with Pisces pessimism, or dampened by Neptune’s wet blankets. When they choose, the Fish can be soothingly supportive, full of faith and encouragement. If they don’t choose, well ….. there may come a time when the Mercury Bird is left out on a limb, singing alone.
There are some things these two can share happily, some ways in which they bear a striking resemblance. One of them is the appreciation of beauty. Most of us don’t notice beauty enough, I guess, but Gemini and Pisces are both acutely aware of the transiting loveliness of Nature, the changing of the seasons, sunrise and sunset—and both are usually inclined to bathe their souls in art, poetry or music … the spoken or the written word. Pisces absorbs beauty in ecstasy, silently. Gemini grins, in awe and excited wonder. Somehow, beauty brings the Fish and the Twins together, forms a bridge over which they can toss a sunbeam …. and perhaps reach the other side of each other.
Another way they’re alike is that it’s hard to get either of them to pay strict attention to what you’re saying, or to get them to look directly at you for more than a fraction of an instant. Gemini’s eyes are sharp, alert, sometimes mocking. Pisces eyes are soft, wandering, liquid and full of comprehension when they focus on you, which isn’t often. Gemini eyes, too, focus only briefly, then dart restlessly here and there, birdlike. Like their eyes, the minds of Gemini and Pisces wander also, but for different reasons ….. to separate galaxies.
The reason Pisceans make such excellent sounding boards for the rest of us is that the Fish have been, in a karmic or a spiritual sense, through it all. They’ve learned how to do without constant attention and adulation. Knowing how to do without, and not complaining about it, is Neptune’s strength, a Piscean weapon against the disappointments of Life. It makes these people stronger than they seem, much tougher than they appear to be. The Fish are used to being overlooked, even before they’re born. Geminis, however, are accustomed to being heard and noticed from the time they’re chattering toddlers. Which brings us to one of the main reasons these two Sun Signs come together, when they do. Gemini must communicate, needs to express himself or herself—and compassionate Pisces nearly always finds time to listen with genuine interest to both the heartaches and the excitements of others. Gemini couldn’t survive without an audience to appreciate the magic of Mercury’s beautiful ribbons of words. And the Fish couldn’t survive without feeling needed. But after a while, the Twins might lose this great gift offered by Pisces, if Neptune’s gentle longings are consistently ignored. There will be signs. Clear indications. And when they appear, they should be heeded. The best time to mend a mistake is when it’s small.
|Gemini:||A magazine just accepted the article I wrote! Isn’t that great news?|
|Pisces:||See how reddish the clouds are over there? I remember my grandfather used to say, Red sky at night, sailor’s delight—red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning…..|
|Gemini:||Did you hear what I said about my magazine article?|
|Pisces:||I’m sorry. I’m afraid I wasn’t listening.|
Gemini Woman and Pisces Man
If you shut your eyes and are a lucky one, you may see at times a shapeless pool of lovely pale colours, suspended in the darkness.
There has never been a Fish who was not slightly uncertain about where he stood with the Gemini woman he loves. She will give him plenty of occasions to be jealous, or what passes for jealousy with Pisceans, which is a rather mild form of it, to be sure.
But it won’t do him a bit of good, because there’s nothing to be done about the apparent fickleness of the Twins. (I’m assuming you know by now that every Gemini female is two-women-in-one. She began flirting when she was in the bassinet or being pushed in her buggy, blowing kisses to strangers, grinning at anyone who noticed her, capturing hearts with her bright, twinkling star-eyes.)
This female will never really grow up. She’s like a mischievous, charming little girl, who cries when she’s scolded, laughs merrily when she’s pleased, coaxes and teases and wheedles until she gets her own way—and getting her own way with a Pisces man isn’t too difficult. He’s essentially a gentle soul, affectionate and tolerant, not terribly demanding. Of course, Pisceans can have their irritable, cranky spells, becoming regular crosspatches when they’ve been imposed on once too often. But most of the time he’s willing to try his best to answer her needs. He may get confused when her needs, along with her wishes and dreams, keep changing, but he’ll keep right on trying. For that matter, he’s not exactly a tower of stability himself. Neither of these two were blessed with much of the stuff at birth. The Fish becomes quickly restless after long periods of fighting the seaweed of obstacles and delays, and as for her—well, Gemini women possess only a thimbleful of patience, if that much. Needless to say, this will constitute one of the frequent snarls in the smoothness of this 4-10 Sun Sign Pattern relationship. Patience is the main ingredient called for in any recipe for happiness and harmony.
The eyes of a Pisces man have the look of being lost. Gemini eyes have the look of searching for something about to be found. With Pisces, Aquarius, Scorpio and Gemini—all four Sun Signs—the pattern of the personality and the stamp of the soul is in the eyes.
Her mind is like a house of glass from which she gazes out on life, with a three-dimensional view of every direction her longings may take. Such multiple choice causes many manifestations in the outward personality, but mostly ….. moodiness. The moods of Mercury-ruled Gemini are not the same as the deeper oceans of the Neptune moods of Pisces. They are lightning fast, like quicksilver, coming upon her as unpredictably as a change in the wind.
The mind of the Fish is like a house of many windows too, but with no glass panes, no shutters or blinds to protect him from the seasons—or from her moods. A Pisces man is vulnerable and sensitive, not only to the treatment he receives from others, but to the feelings and emotions of those near him, absorbing their own troubles and symptoms in his own mind and body. So you can see that a relationship with the changeable, frequently troubled Gemini female, who sometimes projects two emotions simultaneously, may at times be somewhat shattering to the Neptune-ruled male.
This woman was born sparking both mental and physical energy like shock waves. Pisces was born tired. It’s little wonder that the Fish is a trifle spiritually fatigued, considering all he’s seen throughout so many incarnations … all the power and the glory, the ugly and the beautiful, the horrifyingly unspeakable—and the ecstatically indescribable. It’s exhausting. Especially when you’re tempted, in daydreams, to compare it to the present drab and mundane existence. That much at least his Gemini woman will understand. His need to see the world through soft-tinted glass strikes an echoing chord in her own heart. She, too, would like things to be different, lovelier. But her mercurial nature doesn’t shrink from coldly and clearly analyzing things as they are, while she’s dreaming of how she’d like them to be—whereas Pisces never wants to admit the awful truth of anything. Her constant tearing apart the fabric of Life to see how it might be more acceptably put back together again alarms him. When she begins this analytical process with love, which Pisces knows deeply cannot be analyzed, lest its delicacy be shattered, it signals the beginning of trouble in River City—Philadelphia, Tulsa, Beverly Hills, Pittsburgh, Belpre, Parkesburg, Denver, Coshocton—or wherever. Gemini-Pisces couples tend to change residence more frequently than any other Sun Sign combination (except Gemini-Sag, double Gemini or double Sag). Actually, this is a decided plus factor, because the excitement of moving doesn’t leave as much time for petty squabbles.
Like all 4-10 Sun Sign Patterns, Gemini and Pisces must cope with the vibration of tension. Their natures are so totally different, their motives inexplicable to one another most of the time. Hurtful situations involving relatives, the parents of one or the other, or their individual careers may be the stage for the explosions of disagreement. With a harmonious exchange of the Sun and Moon in their nativities (or conjoined Moons) threads of sympathy will draw them closer together. Without such planetary first aid, each will suffer many wounds, which could take a long time to heal.
She’s capable of locking him out of the house all night if he stays too long gabbing with a neighbor. Then he’s capable of muttering, Who needs it? and drowning his troubles at the corner saloon, which causes her to lock him out of the house again—which causes him to escape into John Barleycorn again—which causes her to ……. and so on. The one thing a Pisces man cannot bear for long is a barrage of criticism, sarcasm and accusation, and his Gemini woman’s negative twin excels in the art of satirical invective. Her angry torrents of words and clever use of subtle nuance can rain on the sensitive soul of the Fish like sharp hailstones of hurt. On the other hand, one thing a Gemini woman cannot stand is silence—or being left alone with no audience—and one thing in which Pisces excels is escape from unpleasant scenes. Sometimes you’d swear these Neptune people have literally mastered the art of de-materialization. Poof! They’re gone! Just like that. Then she’s left by herself. Well, not quite by herself. She can always fight it out with her other half—her ever present Twin, who surely comprehends her need to express her torments more than does the Fish, who can’t see for the life of him why anyone should want to waste so much time in futile verbal contests. Pisces tends instinctively to feel his way through trouble. Gemini inclines to talk it away. Even though they may truly love each other, these two sometimes seem like total strangers attempting to communicate with word and sign language, scrambled like a game of anagrams with half the letters missing. Gemini talks—and Pisces won’t always listen. Pisces weeps—and Gemini doesn’t always sympathize. Yet they both need desperately to be accepted and understood, for neither of them understand themselves. They’re involved in a mutual quest for self-identity, each born under the influence of duality, like four people living under one roof, two visibly—the other two locked up inside, trying to escape and make themselves known.
Their sexual adjustment will not be made without effort, although, assuming a positive Sun-Moon aspect or other favorable planetary exchanges in their horoscopes, he can probably satisfy her need not to be smothered or overly possessed, and she can probably provide the variety of affectionate expression he must either have—or become bored. Neither Gemini nor Pisces requires flaming passion for lovemaking to bring them the contentment of true intimacy, and both are capable of adapting instantly to the other’s ephemeral whims and wishes. Yet a real depth of physical blending may be missing in their union. Is it because love alone is never enough to satisfy the nameless longings of either Pisces or Gemini? Or is it because Air and Water Signs seldom feel quite the same overpowering urge for sexual consummation of their initial mental and emotional affinity as do Earth and Fire Signs?
Whatever the reason, these two never find it easy to become one flesh, or to sexually know one another, in the biblical sense. An ideal man-woman Oneness may not be achieved without unselfishness, a quality as necessary in sex as in other aspects of love and friendship. While Pisces usually comprehends this fully, the more childlike Gemini woman sometimes does not. Their intimate moments are likely to be dictated according to her impulsive desires, rather than in answer to their mutual instincts. If she allows him to teach her by example the meaning of unselfish giving—physically as well as mentally and emotionally—their physical closeness will become a repeated renewal of their love, followed by a deeper communion than before, because of an exchanging of their inner natures, making him more spontaneous, like her—and her more tranquil, like him.
As I’ve said, they are similar in some of their attitudes. They both prefer unlisted phone numbers, privacy and freedom—both of them usually enjoy poetry, music, art or dancing. And they each intensely dislike routine. Boredom is a mutual enemy. Not so fortunately, however, they’re also both inclined to exaggerate the truth, all the way from tiny white lies to premeditated deception—always rationalized away by myriad excuses. Frequently, when Gemini accuses Pisces of distorting the truth (or vice-versa) it’s the pot calling the kettle black. A Gemini woman finds Life and Love impossible to comprehend with the senses alone. Her ruler, Mercury, demands that she use her intellect in solving the puzzle. Maybe she could figure it all out if someone would really-truly listen to her doubts and despairs, her ecstasies and her ideas. A Pisces man can do this for her if he will—patiently and sympathetically hearing her out, waiting for her to complete her convoluted circles of reasoning and finally locate the right turn in the road toward happiness. After a while, she’ll take his hand as they walk along together, and his eyes won’t look so lost anymore. How can a man be lost when there are not just one but two charming, delightful feminine companions beside him? Being in love with Twins may be disturbing and perplexing at times, but no one ever said it was humdrum.
To the Pisces man, love is just another dream, in which he, the dreamer, joyfully controls the world he’s created in his imagination through his intuitive sense perceptions ……. colored with muted pastels, fragile and changeable. The constantly expressed dissatisfactions of his Gemini lady often tear great rents in his dream—and he tries to patch it, make it like new again. But dreams are not easily mended, once they’ve been torn apart. They are made of such misty material.
If she will speak softly, move gently … slowly … she may enter his dream world with him, and see love the way he does—as a thing of calm and beauty. All it takes is putting herself, Gemini-wise, in his place now and then, which will eventually lead her straight into his heart—the very haven she’s so long been searching for and thought she’d never find ….. that magical garden where roses grow without the need for protective thorns.
Gemini Man and Pisces Woman
In his absence, things are usually quiet on the island. The faeries take an hour longer in the morning, the beasts attend to their young …… but with the coming of Peter, who hates lethargy, they are all under way again …….
To keep a love affair or a marriage serene and untroubled, the typical female Fish will do almost anything. She’ll accommodate herself, her routine and her habits to the convenience of the Gemini man she loves, even though her feminine-liberation-minded female friends will be scandalized. They’ll pity her openly, but she’ll just smile and ignore them.
She’s not really a masochistic slave to the whims of the Twins. Her sympathetic acquaintances just think she is. They’re not alone. Her Gemini man is under the same impression. And that’s exactly the impression this sweet, accommodating, soft-spoken lady intends to project to him (and to all her inquisitive friends, neighbors and relatives). She knows what she’s doing. She’s making life easier for herself. Once she’s fallen in love with a Gemini the Neptune woman has enough common sense to comprehend that she has only two practical choices in this challenging 4-10 Sun Sign Pattern relationship. She can decide love isn’t worth the demands a Gemini man makes upon her delicate psyche—and leave him. Just slip away some morning when he’s not around. Or she can decide that the pleasure and happiness, the contentment and peace of loving him—and receiving the love and devotion of at least one of his Twin selves in return—are worth a few adjustments here and there in the relationship. If the latter is her choice, she’ll simply make it work. It may take some intricate planning, but she’ll manage.
Passive resistance is her Neptune secret. She was born with an awesome talent for it, as some people are born with an ear for music or perfect pitch. She knows just when to back off, how far to retreat—precisely when it’s a propitious time to advance and how far she can go with him. Actually, she doesn’t really know. She senses it. It’s as though she was equipped at birth with some sort of invisible but sensitive antenna that flashes both precognitive and perceptive signals to her regarding human behavior patterns.
All Geminis are undeniably as mentally quick as can be, always alert and on guard, nearly impossible to deceive. But as clever as the Gemini man indisputably is, he can be blind to the Neptunian strategies of a Pisces woman. If she has things she wants to do, things of which he might disapprove, she won’t waste her energies rocking their relationship with insistent demands or tearful pleas. She’ll simply do as he wishes when he’s there—and as she wishes when he’s not there. What she wants to do that doesn’t receive his blessing needn’t be anything sinister or sly. It needn’t be planning to rob a bank or being unfaithful.
It could be something as innocent and ordinary as sleeping an extra hour. Like all Birds, the typical Gemini is nearly always up and alert quite early, either whistling merrily or complaining crankily (depending on which Gemini Twin arose first), and he can become quite critical of those who lie abed later than Gemini believes they should when there are things to be done. It could be something she wants to read—which isn’t necessarily the reading matter he would recommend to her. Perhaps visiting friends when he feels she should be spending her time in a more profitable way. Maybe keeping an appointment at the spa. Why would he frown on that? Because he thinks she’s beautiful just the way she is—and besides, the money she spends on personal beautification could be better spent by the two of them traveling somewhere together. To Gemini, the absolute ultimate of ecstasies is a change of scene—going somewhere—anywhere at all that’s different and away from daily routine.
Gemini’s cleverness includes an unerring instinct for the expedient. Like, if she made her spa appointment when he was present, he’d try to talk her out of it, either with his considerable powers of persuasion and charm—or through cranky criticism. But once she’s gone and he sees the finished product, he seldom argues the point. First of all, she looks lovely, and he can’t find it in his heart to quarrel with her when she’s so appealing. Secondly, he knows it’s a waste of time to try to stop something after the fact. This man seldom wastes time. He believes time was made to be filled by doing something—every second of it somehow utilized (except for sleeping, a luxury the average Mercury birds indulge in for only very brief periods). Time is the stuff of which Life—and dreams—are made. To squander it by doing simply nothing is, to him, a sinful thing.
The Pisces woman has a completely different view of time. She feels that it’s inexhaustible—there’s always more of it tomorrow if any of it slips away from her today. And she believes one of the nicest ways to spend it is doing nothing. Especially after she’s depleted her energies with a thousand and one duties of service to others, and her normally cheerful spirit is sagging at the seams. Time is best spent when possible, she feels, in just being herself, simply existing ……. in the cool, green Pisces waters of calm contemplation. It refreshes her soul.
Living under the always somewhat tense 4-10 vibration with a Gemini man, her soul needs a lot of refreshing. The very qualities that drew her close to him in the beginning may later grow to be extremely wearing and wearying to her more placid nature. His mind is full of little surprises, and this delights her. He’s quick, mentally agile, with an instant grasp of everything he sees, hears or reads. His ideas pop out when least expected, and they’re nearly always original and fascinating. He seems to be forever busy dreaming, thinking, planning or doing—while she is busy just being. He can change occupations or careers at the wink of one of his twinkling eyes, and she never knows what to expect around the next corner. It’s exciting. It’s intriguing and compelling. He’s like a mystery she can’t completely fathom, and she adores mysteries. But these same traits of her Mercury-urged man, after a while, may leave her longing for solitude and quiet ….. for the security of sameness ….. a retreat into the soothing stillness of her own slower and softer dreams and goals.
For a time, his wonderful wit, his heart-tugging, little-boy, three-cornered grin, the star-shine in his expressive eyes, his sheer intelligence and his multiple talents will keep the female Fish mesmerized by his Mercurial spell. It’s like watching a living kaleidoscope to see the changes in his moods from affectionate, merry, warmly tender and generous—to irritable, sarcastic, sullen and stingy—and back again (to the dominance of the good Twin). When she watches his mental acrobatics from a distance, they’re interesting, even electrifying, and certainly stimulating. It’s only when she gradually allows herself to become an integral and inseparable part of the many-faceted ups and downs of his unpredictable mental, physical and emotional activity that the wear and tear on her tranquility begins to show.
However much she may try to resist, the Neptune woman can’t help being eventually drawn into the nearest vortex of human experience. She absorbs the feelings and emotions around her like a psychic sponge or a sensitive photographic plate (much in the same way that Cancerians and Scorpios do). And because her own aura is keyed to a gentler chord, the percussion of Gemini cymbals and the high notes of the flutes can sometimes jangle her nerves and disturb her poise, leaving her vaguely depressed. Her solution is to swim quietly away from the floods of feeling around her which threaten to drown her…. enter the still world of her inner serenity … whatever the cost…. and return, her strength renewed. During these necessary periods of retreat, the Gemini man who loves her will be puzzled and hurt, sometimes angry.
It never occurs to him that he’s adept in the self-defensive tactic of mental retreat himself, an expert at disappearing into aloof detachment when she most needs him to be attentive and concerned. Remember that Pisces is a very old soul, born wise—and Gemini is the symbolic Toddler Child (see The Twelve Mysteries of Love in the front of this book). He can’t help being a trifle self-centered. Yet, often his insight is surprising, despite the symbolic Child charisma. There will be times when he’ll display an amazing comprehension of what she’s going through, then show her he understands with his Gemini light touch of compassion.. exquisitely tender. Or he senses when the right thing to do is to make her laugh, suggest a trip.. or just a drive or walk together. These are the rare and singing moments of their love.
Frequently, the sexual chemistry between this man and woman is the silent alchemy that brings them closer together in every way—not just physically. Somehow, through the blending of their Air and Water Elements during the intimacies of their sexual union, he becomes more like her—and she becomes more like him. So that, strangely, after their lovemaking, she’s more alive, vibrant and aware.. he’s more subdued and gentle, less restless and seeking.
When Water joins with Air in sexual Oneness (see The Blending of the Elements section in the back of the book) Water magically transforms Air into its own element, in the form of life-giving, cooling rain, after which all of Nature is fresh again, drenched with promise and scented with new hope. Enclosed within the circle of each other’s arms, the Fish and the Twins often find the elusive harmony they reach for together at other times, and never quite seem to capture. The sexual mystery between them can be a powerful regenerative experience for both, the secret and strong foundation for their continued desire to try to understand one another’s vastly different personalities.
Her procrastination, her tendency toward evading issues annoys and frustrates him. But she’s an enormously facile subject changer. It’s all he can do to keep up with her, swift as he is. His periodic criticism and scattered interests trouble and upset her. Yet she nearly always finds a way to avoid unpleasantness. He’d rather she didn’t, because he needs the occasional mental stimulation of debate and discussion to keep his Mercury wits sharpened. She’d rather he relaxed more and worried less. He’d prefer her to relax less and worry more. Well, perhaps not worry—but at least see things as they are, instead of the way she’d like them to be (even though he often succumbs to daydreaming himself). A Gemini man is designed in a mosaic pattern of sudden twists and turns. Just when you think he’s critical of metaphysical matters, he’ll buy a book about the Great Pyramid. I knew one Mercury Bird who claimed contempt for the occult, then mentioned he’d like a crystal ball for Christmas. He wanted to experiment. Experimentation is the adrenalin Gemini needs to keep going. If something manages to catch his interest, he’ll never rest until he’s figured out the concept and improved upon it.
The complexities of this man’s mind and attitudes will forever both magnetize and elude the Pisces woman. Sometimes his contradictions will increase her admiration of him, moving her to even try to imitate his analytical and intellectual yet occasionally imaginative approach. At other times, she’ll despair of ever truly knowing him. For different reasons, he’ll also wonder if he’ll ever really know her. Because there are two of him and two of her, the game never ends. Gemini and Pisces are both signs of duality. Now and then, when she’s mentally, physically and spiritually exhausted, she’ll turn icy cold and refuse to communicate, which distresses him more than he ever allows her to realize. But most of the time she avoids a scene by ignoring her own hurt feelings. When ugliness, confusion or confrontation appears on the horizon, the dreamy female Fish just pretends it isn’t there, and for her, then, it disappears. She’s learned that if you await patiently, most things resolve themselves. But it’s impossible for him to face a problem by make-believing it doesn’t exist. He’s compelled to analyze and solve it immediately. He can no more resist this urge than he can resist working a crossword puzzle or answering the questions aloud when he watches a quiz show on television (which he always guesses before the person who’s being asked). Every Gemini man is an instructor at heart, driven to purify muddy waters with the clearness of reason and logic. Then, too, there’s the puzzling contradiction of his daydreaming.
Because Gemini and Pisces are of the Water and Air Elements, they’ll never be as demonstrative, warm and affectionate outwardly as people born under the Fire Element. Yet, because of their combined water and air essence, they offer each other a great gift—freedom. She’ll seldom question his impulses or his whereabouts, for she is not the possessive type. He’ll grant her, likewise, the same freedom of movement. He won’t mind where she floats around when he isn’t there—but when he is, he’ll expect her to be near, for Gemini requires an audience. She’s a beautiful listener, and to him, this is her most endearing quality. Privately, he knows this soft-spoken lady of quiet secrets and subtleties is genuinely interested in everything he has to say—and above all, this is his deepest need.
She knows this changeable man of many moods will always need her—and this, above all, is her deepest need: to be needed. When he’s sarcastic, as Gemini can sometimes be, he breaks her heart. But when his charm returns, his eyes twinkle with surprises again, when he projects his wistful three-cornered grin and his Peter Pan yearnings, she knows she’s made the right choice to compromise her preferred life style to his. By doing so, she hasn’t lost anything really, and she’s gained her very own human kaleidoscope, that changes colors, shapes and designs at the slightest touch.
Repeatedly, he’ll scold her for being so generous and extravagant. Then one day, without warning, he’ll fly all over town, as though Mercury’s silver wings were truly fastened on his heels, borrowing money he doesn’t have, from two or three banks, to lend to a friend in trouble. For months, he’ll make serious plans to enroll in night school to get his engineering degree, then he’ll suddenly buy a typewriter and announce he’s going to be a writer. He’ll come home, tired from doing mental push-ups all day, refuse dinner, inform her he’s going to bed, and grumpily head for the bedroom. Less than five minutes later, he’ll reappear, wink at her with the old magic, and ask her if she wants to go for a ride to watch the sunset, then have dinner in town and see a play.
While she’s changing, he’ll nag her to hurry, and irritably complain that it takes her forever to get ready to go anywhere. But when she’s sitting in the car beside him, he unexpectedly tells her she’s never looked more beautiful. Do you know I wouldn’t know what to do without you? he asks her. She doesn’t reply, she just smiles. She’s known that all along. That’s why she’s still there.
