They were going round and round the island, but they did not meet because all were going at the same rate.
Before we get tied into mental pretzel knots, trying to analyze this 1-1 Sun Sign Pattern association, let’s get the arithmetic straightened out. A Gemini and a Gemini equals a group of four bright, active people (two sets of Twins) tossing ideas, dreams and challenges back and forth between themselves and the world at large.
They may occasionally block each other’s view of life, because they tend to see it in different magnifications, through the wide-angle zoom lens of their Mercurial vision, and sometimes they walk or run at varying speeds. Yet, in one sense, they all four travel at the same rate of speed, in that they all understand one another’s need for freedom. Their vibrations radiate from the same frequencies, and their broken rhythms are usually in tune. A broken rhythm may not be orthodox music, but it makes great jazz. The trouble is, while they’re jazzing around, they might miss each other in the swiftly passing scenery.
When two Geminis merge and get their vibes, rhythms and mental perspectives working in a parenthetic pattern, the four of them can use each other as a reassuring tie to reality. From the home base of their mutual empathy, they can run out and seduce the world—return briefly to be understood—then set forth once again on a new mental seduction. Do you understand this page? If you do, you’re a Gemini yourself, because it’s all astrologically accurate but complicated Mercury double-talk. If you don’t understand it, and you’re reading this to learn to comprehend a Gemini team, partnership or couple you know, stay with us, but be prepared to exercise your mental muscles—and don’t forget your parachute.
Philosopher-astrologer Alan Watts defined Man (he didn’t include women, but that was before ERA made all male animals aware that we’re people too) by explaining that the individualization of the Creator, expressing His total Being through the multiple millions of souls on Earth, can be conceived of as God, playing hide-and-seek with Himself. It’s long been my favorite esoteric definition of Man and Woman’s relation to the Universe, since I’ve always suspected that Man and Woman and their co-Creators are a unity, after pondering the Genesis riddle that the latter created the former in Their own Image. However, I really must correct one flaw in this otherwise very deeply perceptive definition.
I’m sure the late, both kindly and brilliant Alan Watts will forgive us if we re-phrase his words as: God and His Mate, playing hide-and-seek with Themselves. Now it is perfect. But anyway, the point I was trying to make is that, in the case of Gemini, our co-Creators are playing hide-and-seek with Themselves at high speed, with many more hiding places, and probably surprising Themselves more than They do with ordinary mortals, who are confused enough with the challenges of being just one person. There is, of course, another side to all this, the individual side, and the integrity of each unique soul.
The Yogi-Buddhist Nirvana concept is grossly distorted. All this business of permanent blending with the Great All is nonsense, metaphysically unsound, and quite literally impossible. We are part of both the fused and the separate bodies of our co-Creators—in a symbolic sense, Aries people being near Their heads, Gemini being near Their arms, hands and fingers, Leos near Their hearts, and so forth. (That’s admittedly an oversimplification, but will suffice for now.) Now, a nose is not a mouth (when did you ever hear of a nose that ate corn on the cob?), nor is an eye a hand, nor is an ear a heart. (Who ever heard of an ear-beat?) In other words, you are You. The unique you-of-you is now, ever has been, and ever shall be—your individual self, and consciously so—not just during those periods of time when your blindness separates you from our co-Creators, but also after you blend with Them, from time to time, and even while you’re at one with Them.
The secret of the latter condition of perfect peace, wisdom, and power is contained in the polarity of power—humility—expressed through the word atone (at-one). Not until you truly atone, and fully comprehend the meaning of the word, may you be at-one with God and His Mate. However, although the achievement of experiencing such at-one-ment, periodically and repeatedly, is a glorious thing, you need not (indeed you should not) remain at-one with Them on a permanent basis. That would be dreadfully boring for the individuality, just as being inseparably blended in the ecstatic embrace of sexual union, however pure the love between the twin souls might be, would be dull and boring if it were to be an eternal, constant state.
Such a concept removes the very core of existence, which is light and shadow … the perfect Libran balance of each … the stimulation of controversy, equally balanced with peaceful agreement—with no murders please, within the necessary controversy syndrome—no murder of sex, people, animals, or anything else. That’s against all the rules of the cosmic hide-and-seek game.
Well, let’s see … I began discussing Man’s and Woman’s relationship with God and His Mate, then went on to an explanation of your individuality, so you’ll all be aware that your own sacred and holy, personal egos can never be destroyed by blending in a nirvanic forever with anyone’s concept of God—all in a few paragraphs. The Gemini essence is extremely contagious. Actually, I’ll level with you, although my remarks were all made quite seriously, and are reflective of ancient esoteric truth, I deliberately strung my words together on a chain of quick subject changes—each different, yet all consistently leading into one another—to give you a brief idea of the necessity for remaining alert when you’re involved in any sort of discussion with a Gemini, let alone two of them, which is really four of them.
You see, sometimes Gemini double-talk is an aid to superimposing two apparently polarized opinions into a stereoscopic wholeness of third-dimensional depth, the third dimension added by the perceptive recipient of the words. Are you with me? You’re simply going to have to become accustomed to word games if you expect to play verbal Pong-Ping with the Twins, and Pong-Ping is the same as Ping-Pong when you’re gazing into the Gemini mirror. Now, is it reflecting back to you more clearly?
Each Gemini contains a twin mirror image of himself (or herself), in reverse, the positive and negative poles of his or her personality. This is because each Gemini symbolizes the soul, on its trip around the astrological, karmic wheel, experiencing the toddler stage of awareness that it’s not alone in the Universe, realizing also that there are two distinct sides to the character of each man and woman, which must be brought into harmony before it’s possible to relate to others. The trouble is, Gemini seldom knows which of his (or her) split personalities is the real one. If anyone asked (or if our co-Creators asked this portion of Their individualization), Will the real Twin please stand up and be recognized?, two separate people would pop up, and the game of hide-and-seek would begin all over again.
Naturally, then, when a pair of Twins decide to tangle their temperaments, things can get pretty crisscrossed. There are few Geminians who can sort themselves out from the myriad disguises and conflicting desires of their natures. Gemini is ruled by trickster Mercury, the planet of lightning speed (though not quite as capable of speed as Swifty Uranus), who forces this man, woman or child to try on a thousand faces, then discard them, in a restive search for personal identity.
The purpose of the masquerade is what separates the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and Scorpio from Gemini—in case you’ve been wondering. Scorp changes false faces for an entirely different purpose—to deliberately keep you in the dark, whereas Gemini is just trying to make up his (or her) mind which face belongs there. No, that’s Libra indecision. Let’s try again. Gemini is trying on masks in an effort to find the true person he or she really is. Indecision has nothing to do with it, in a really detailed analysis. Did I already say that? Yes, I did. I just realized. I said the same thing at the end of the last sentence in the previous paragraph.
Well, get used to it. Geminis often repeat themselves—say things twice. Like, they’ll say: … What time is it? … wait a second or so, and repeat: What time is it? before you’ve had time to answer that it’s half past anything or a quarter till, which makes it difficult to converse with them in any sort of synchronized way, sometimes. But not always.
Since Gemini is a mental Air Sign, these people are driven to spinning their brains almost continually, even in their sleep, thinking, theorizing, figuring, projecting, condemning, endorsing, discarding, sorting and analyzing the cold, hard facts—at the very same time that they’re chasing their visionary dream. You can see why they’re all human jigsaw puzzles.
The Mercury-ruled roam the world, either mentally or physically, or both, in search of an elusive ideal of perfect truth and happiness, then often return home again, to listen to a bird singing in a tall tree—the same bird, the same song, the same tree they knew as children. After traveling all over the mental continents of their imaginations, they sometimes, if they’re lucky, realize, at last, that their truest dreams were dreamed when childhood’s perception was clear and uncontaminated by adult logic and cynicism.
Any 1-1 Sun Sign Pattern combination brings with it the special and unique satisfaction of association with a person enough like one’s own self that there’s little fear of rejection of personality—although there’s always a danger of an overbalance of the similar characteristics. A double-Gemini relationship is especially comforting to each of the four of them, because it’s always reassuring to have a pal, relative, neighbor, business associate, lover or mate who’s as messed up as you are yourself. It saves a lot of tiresome explanations and apologies. But it can also be wearing on the nervous system, because of the continual frustration of attempting to fool someone who anticipates all your maneuvers and rationalizations.
At least these Sun Signs, when doubled up, can recognize one another somewhat more easily than an outsider would recognize either of the four of them. Yesterday, Gemini was a gentle soul, shy and self-effacing, somewhat detached, quiet and reflective, with occasional spells of wistfulness and longing. Today, the very same Gemini is cynical, sarcastic, irritable, insulting—and acutely alert. Tomorrow, he (or she) may be calm, steady and conservative to the point of being downright stuffy. Then, without the faintest warning, Gemini will turn into a will-o’-the-wisp, sprinkling dreams like lemon drops, scattering ideas like confetti, restless, yearning, as physically active as he (or she) is verbally communicative and emotionally restless. It’s terribly puzzling to the rest of us, but even more so to the Gemini himself—or herself. Especially if he (or she) is involved in a close tie with another Gemini. Then, of course, the puzzlement is twinned and twice as tormenting.
The trickster aspect of Gemini’s ruling planet, Mercury, is always hiding behind the sharp Gemini intellect, revealing itself in all manner of minor and major ways. An excellent example is Gemini Bob Hope, the legendary comedian whow had the rapid-fire, speedy delivery of jokes, which nearly tumbled over one another in the telling, delivered in such machine-gun style. If you ever get to watch one of Hope’s longer comic routines where he does a monologue for fifteen minutes or a half hour you’ll witness Mercury’s delight in tricking and fooling people.
Approximately every two minutes or so, the Gemini Hope would make a remark that when analyzed, meant essentially: Get ready, Folks. I’m about to close my act, and sign off. But then he would continue. A couple of minutes (or even one minute or a few seconds) later he would toss out another one-liner, indicating again that his routine was coming to a close. Yet, he continued. This was a consistent pattern with Bob Hope’s Gemini comedy patter. Mercury drove him to try to trick his audience repeatedly—which is rather astute of Mercury, because it made Hope’s listeners pay strict attention, being led, as they were, to believe that each joke was his last for the night. Bob Hope’s reputation for possessing the finest comedy timing in show business was deserved, a talent that’s directly inherited from the influence of his Sun ruler, Mercury.
A blend of Gemini and Gemini has the advantage of creating an atmosphere of freedom of thought and movement, so that their combined intellects can click into action unhampered by petty jealousies, suspicions and restrictions (allowing, as always, for a more conservative Moon Sign or Ascendent). Even then, the emotional climate between them will be comparatively free and easy, allowing them to accomplish lots of tricks and capture many a dream together. These two will sharpen their wits on one another, usually forgive and forget quickly—and boredom will rarely be a problem.
But there are also disadvantages to their association, which they’ll have to face, and find a way to erase, between them. Lacking the stability of the more prosaic, less complicated Sun Signs, Gemini and Gemini can tempt each other to scatter their talents to the four winds, neither one willing to hold down the other or able to provide the necessary patience and dependability for success, either on an emotional or on a material level. They may remind their friends of two brightly colored balloons, filled with a blend of happy helium and hot air, having a gay and marvelous time floating through the clouds, but not going anywhere in particular. With this combination, their Moon Signs will write the ending to the story. If the Moon Sign in either birth chart is unfavorable in aspect to the Gemini Sun Sign of the other, they can create lovely poetry or jazz, paint the clouds silver, or paint the town red. But few of their dreams and schemes will take off, or if they do, there could be a crash landing. Or, their balloons might take off too fast, then fly away out of sight, because they weren’t grounded. They can still make it all work out harmoniously, but in order to do so, they’ll have to be more cautious and less casual.
With a favorable Luminary aspect between their Suns and Moons, however, the sky is truly the limit for creative breakthroughs, scientific discovery, intellectual attainment, material security—and even spiritual perception. As for emotional happiness and harmony, well … it’s really their own choice. Geminis manufacture their own emotions to sell, keep or give away. What do these Mercury Birds seek on the wind out there? Whatever it is, it’s something beyond what is visible and tangible. One Gemini might ask the other, but the answers they get will be exactly the same as if the Twins had asked themselves.
|Gemini:||What is it you’re looking for?|
|Gemini:||I’m not sure. But when I find it, I’ll know what it is.|
|Gemini:||And just where do you think you’ll find it?|
|Gemini:||Where? Why, most anywhere, I guess|
And yet, too often, the last place the Twins will look is in their own backyards, where the miracle they’re searching for may have been waiting all the time.
Gemini Woman and Gemini Man Zodiac Compatibility
Well, then, we could go on, said John.
That is the awful thing, John. We should have to go on, for we don’t know how to stop.
This man and woman—although it would be more fitting to call them boy and girl, whatever their illusionary chronological age—are sometimes drawn together for no more reason than that it’s fun to have someone to cross the street with you at the corners. Then you can, if that person is a Gemini, trade fast bets with each other about whether you can make it on GO before the traffic sign switches to STOP. Like when the light at an intersection is green, and you don’t know how fast it’s going to turn to red. It’s exciting. Dangerous, but exciting.
Sure, it sounds dippy, but switching from street corners to living rooms, offices or classrooms, it’s a fair example of the sort of mental checkers and chess games Geminis play with themselves and with each other. When you’re alone a lot, you can think up bushels of crazy ideas. Geminis don’t seem to be lonely, but they are. It’s a lonely thing to wonder and wander, mixing with frightened, preachy people, to whom the only important game is the one you win by simply surviving. Especially when you know there are so many more important things to be fascinated by than merely staying alive. In fact, many Geminis wholeheartedly agree with Mercury-ruled Peter Pan that to die, would be an awfully big adventure, perhaps the greatest adventure of all.!
If you’re a Gemini, your entire life is spent searching and learning, so why should death be any different? Like the elusive something you’ve been trying to pin down, express or define since you were five years old or so. True, Geminis seldom reveal their inner loneliness. But I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s not because they’re barely aware of it. A person can get good at being lonely, with enough practice. It’s like riding a bicycle. It requires concentration in the beginning, but after a time, you don’t even notice your own balance or pedaling—you’re just aware of the motion and the wind blowing your hair.
Because all typical Geminis are naturally glib, bright conversationalists, when two of them first meet, both may talk a lot, and it seems like they’re not thinking of one another seriously. Yet, behind all the chatter, they are—more seriously than either will admit to the other. The dialogue between them will normally flash with wit and sparkle with imagination. It gives each of them time to study the other, when all those little ribbons of speech are rippling all over and around them. But they never say everything that’s on their minds to each other, these two, not even years later when they’ve been in love long enough to know they can trust one another. There’s always something held back.
It’s funny, she may think privately, when you love someone so much, and you’ve been so intimate, that you have to hold back and remember there are things not to tell him, things you really can’t share all the way. Well, when there’s all that that he doesn’t know about her, it’s only right there are things he won’t tell too. Do you imagine that, when Geminis chatter, everything they feel is spilling out in a cascade of words? Oh, no. If you think that, you don’t understand this man and this woman—this boy and this girl.
Without the Gemini talent for expressing ideas in vivid verbal images, people would be exposed to a lot less magic in this dreary-grey world, a lot less money would change hands, and fewer dreams would be dreamed—or come true. The important thing for two Geminis to keep in mind is that, given their mental mental adroitness of Mercury, they can avoid discussing any subject they please or answering any hard questions by dancing around the topic. They can be all blarney and magic when they want to avoid any unpleasantness.
Geminis also have a certain knack for hiding their true age. At any given time of their lives, they can look twenty years younger than they actually are, especially since they never really grow up. Like Peter Pan, the eternal Gemini, they guard the secret of thei age from curious chronological-minded grown-ups—and a few more secrets besides. And at least 75 percent of all Geminis have a nickname, a pseudonym, an alias, or in some way bear more than one name during the course of their lives.
While Geminis can turn things inside out and backwards, in both small and large ways, they aren’t secretive in the same manner as Pisceans, Cancerians and Scorpions are—or for the same reasons. It’s just that there are some soaring thoughts they’re unable to catch and express in speech, for all their Mercurial verbal dexterity. What words could describe an inexpressible longing to literally discover Shangri-La?
If this is so beautiful, they each think, then there just must be something even more beautiful out there, somewhere. Will we be able to find it together? Or can you only find something that special by yourself? Each loveliness that two Geminis touch, Mercury allows them to drink in and enjoy for but a fleeting moment. Only until his (or her) secret Twin Self whispers seductively, Ah, yes! But what else might there be to discover, which is even more perfect? This present glory you’re experiencing is merely proof that a greater glory exists out there … a glory more true, more thrilling, more fulfilling, if only you have the courage to pursue it. How do you know what may be around the next corner, the next kiss, the next dream, the next promise? Don’t stop now, don’t turn back yet! Go on. .… It’s a call more alluring than the song of the Lorelei, and it haunts all Mercury-ruled hearts.
Most of the time, a Gemini female laughs. Once in a while, less frequently, she weeps. When she does, it’s because the lump of loneliness within her has grown so choking that it must turn into tears, or maybe she would simply die from the feeling. Ah, Twin Self! Where are you now, when you’re needed? Off chasing the stars and playing tag with the wind? The Gemini man will tenderly understand her brief touch of Weltschmerz, with a delicacy of perception surprising in one who’s always being accused of being so cold and detached. For all of his curious, inquiring nature, he won’t ask questions when he senses the Gemini woman he loves is languishing from her inexpressible and unexpressed (even to him) terrible loneliness because her Twin has temporarily deserted her. He’ll probably pretend not to notice, masking his concern with a light remark, like. .… Let’s throw ourselves into a wishing well, instead of tossing in pennies, and see what happens! Or perhaps …Come on, we’ll buy two round tickets to Ireland, and make love on the Blarney Stone! Then he’ll kiss her cheek softly and say, very quietly, It’s all right. I’m here.
Yes, it’s partly because he understands the sudden panic his Gemini female feels when her Twin has disappeared and left her alone to cope, like half a person, because his own Twin pulls that trick on him too. But his finesse and tenderness at such times are prompted by more than just knowing how it is with someone born under your own Sun Sign. It’s his … the right word just came to me. Gemini never fumbles. Whatever the situation with the loved one—joyous or tragic, loose or tight—the typical Gemini can, when he (or she) wishes, carry the ball with easy grace, handling embarrassment, fear or anger, with an incredibly light touch. It’s like a magician’s sleight-of-hand, and many Geminis actually are professional magicians (along with Aquarians, Pisceans and Scorpions). There are, percentagewise, however, more Gemini magicians, because these people are amazingly multidextrous with their hands. They’re also multidextrous with their minds—and as for the Gemini heart, it contains many little secret rooms, in which are hidden compassion, gentleness, surprises, humor, hope and sunshine. Some of them are kept locked for a lifetime, and only another Twin holds the passkey.
Two Geminis in love might ask themselves, each about the other—do any of those rooms hold a quality called faithfulness or fidelity? Yes. But the door to that particular room in the Gemini heart is tightly sealed, and it takes more than a passkey to open it. It takes trust. And it takes time. Two kinds of trust: the complete trust each must give to the other—and the trust required to believe in yourself, that what you love is really what you need, and all you’ll ever need. (That’s what takes the time.) But time is free. They can both use as much of it as they like to find that answer within themselves. .… and once it’s been found and the door unlocked, Gemini will be loyal and true forever after.
Nevertheless, it’s probably asking too much to expect either him—or her—to permanently stop flirting, charming, teasing, persuading, or just talking with members of the opposite (or the same) sex. Yet, Gemini lives on the mental plane, essentially existing within the realms of the imagination, and, therefore, may be frequently content to keep human relationships on the same plane. And so, it’s sometimes easier for these two to be technically true to one another than to avoid periodic fantasies. Yet, the woman in his fantasies may really be her—and the boy in her fantasies may really be him. It’s fun to make believe sometimes, that’s all. The more versatile they are as individuals, in their personal lives or careers, the less need they’ll feel to imagine, What would it be like, I wonder, if she would. .… or … What would it be like, for a change, if he would … …
If she would what? If he would what? Anything. Anything at all. Some Geminis even fantasize hurt or anger, then split up because they wonder what a break would feel like. When they find out, they streak back to each other again to rediscover the reality of love. No, it wasn’t a dream. WOW! What a mind blower! Love is real. It’s really real. You can really, nearly trust it. Yes, you nearly, really can! Such a discovery might not stun the average person’s mind, but you must remember that the Twins spend their entire lives separating the possible and the probable from the sure things—and love gives them an exhilarating glimpse of Shangri-la.
These two relate to one another physically, through sexual love, in the kind of kaleidoscopic pattern you might expect, when Air unites with Air, chaperoned by the changeable Mercury. It’s light, often stormy, sometimes whipping love into hurricanes of passion, sometimes calming it into quiet, gentle affection. The ways in which they express their love on a physical level are as multiple-faceted, sensitive and changeable as the ways they express it on the mental and emotional levels, and that can take their sexual behavior from acrobatic embraces on the Blarney Stone to making love underwater or in a helicopter. Whatever desire one Gemini may have, the other can fill it, with the cool touch of a spring breeze or the hot, tropical wind of a monsoon. To comprehend the potential of their physical compatibility, two Geminis who are pondering a relationship will just have to use their imaginations. About the only words which won’t apply to their possible patterns of sexual experience are deep—earthy—and sensual. But Gemini and Gemini can dream up some satisfying substitutes together. Magical is one.
Some Gemini women are as pathetically wistful and lost as Gemini Judy Garland, following a rainbow that forever seems to elude them. Others are as bright and sunny as actress Helen Hunt. Some Gemini men are as disoriented, and inwardly insecure, as Mercury-ruled actor Jim Belushi or comedienne Joan Rivers—others as bold and confident as Geminians Mike Myers and Donald Trump (What separates the winners form the losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate.). It’s not easy to tell them apart, because the wistful, lost Geminis have their bright and hopeful moments … just as the bright, hopeful ones have their wistful, lost and lonely moments. The disoriented Gemini can switch suddenly to stability … and the confident ones can feel occasionally insecure.
I’m afraid astrology doesn’t have a final answer. Perhaps the Gemini man and woman who are in love will just have to forget about that romantic togetherness formula of becoming one, because there will always be four of them. But that also quadruples their chances for happiness. So the odds are good if they cover their bets with the double collateral of lots of trust … and lots of patience.
